There are laws in which journalists have to stick to when it comes to publishing their research.

For example the law of defamation: allow people who consider that their reputation has been or may be harmed by statements made by others to sue for damages or to prevent the publishing of the statements. Laws such as this are put in place in order to protect people however of course it is not always successful.

If a person does decide to sue for damages or prevention then the researcher is liable for the damages, in other words they are legally responsible for the damage that is caused by their actions.

There are also laws within publishing that state that whatever you publish has to be based on fact and cannot solely be the opinion of the researcher.

So when publishing research it is surely at the researcher’s own risk? They risk breeching ethical guidelines on research as well as laws that are set in place.

what makes some research better than others? Is it where primary research is always better than secondary because of its nature to be specifically about your subject?

Freedom of speech vs ethics

In this country, we enjoy the rights of freedom of speech. So if someone researches something surely they have the right to then publish their findings? but the Question i want to pose is where is the line between breaching ethics and freedom of speech?

When it comes to using information that is secondary data, we need to make sure that the information we are using is correct and is in the context that we need it to be in. There are MILLIONS of websites online, and Thousands of books in libraries. But, how do we know if we can trust the information that is online or is in a textbook?

A good place to start could be the cost of publishing research. What are peoples thoughts on this? Are the costs usually greater than how the research is used or how many people use it?
